"Brave Little Ones": A Brief Introduction to "Many Smokes"

​​Published in Reno, Nevada from 1966-1984, “Many Smokes” was a mimeographed periodical created solely by a small group of Native Americans. The newspaper was mainly directed towards other Native Americans, proclaimed as dedicated to the “Universal Indian Brotherhood”. However, many non-Native American readers enjoyed, learned from, and even helped distribute copies of this paper to as many people as possible. Katie Rogers speaks on this particular relationship in her paper, “THE UNDERGROUND PRESS: ITS INFLUENCE ON AMERICAN SOCIOPOLITICAL MOVEMENTS OF THE 1960S AND 1970S(2018)”. When talking about Native American underground press, she says that “specifically, middle class white youths were reading these papers.” No matter who it was being consumed by, however, “Many Smokes” served to inform its readers of local Native American issues, culture, and advice. The Summer 1972 issue of “Many Smokes” displays this by providing valuable resources and empowerment to Native Americans, as well as cataloging frequent occurrences of Native American legal struggles.
